George Box

George Edward Pelham Box (1919-2013) was a British statistician whose work shaped how modern data science thinks about models, experiments, and uncertainty.

He made major contributions to time series analysis, Bayesian methods, and industrial statistics, and helped establish statistics as a practical tool for science and engineering rather than a purely theoretical one.

His most famous line is still quoted constantly:

All models are wrong, but some are useful.

The point is not that modelling is hopeless. It is that every model is a simplification, and the useful ones are the simplifications that still help you decide, predict, or understand something real.

That attitude is a large part of why his name sits in the hero image on this site: a reminder that the job is not perfect truth, but useful approximation.
